The Civil War which swept across the British
Isles in the middle of the seventeenth-century saw fathers fighting sons and brother
killing brother, it was for many 'a world turned upside down.' This online course will
explore the causes, conduct and significance of the English Civil War and we will explore
such topics as why England slid into civil war in the early 1640s, how the war was fought,
the effects of the war on people and society, the rise of Oliver Cromwell and political
and religious radicalism, the trial and execution of Charles I, the creation of the
Commonwealth and Protectorate, and much more

and 1603, transformed England and monarchs such as Henry VIII are larger-than-life figures
who are instantly recognizable. But where did the Tudors come from and why were they so
successful? This online course will examine the first four Tudor monarchs. We will begin
with Henry Tudor's victory at Bosworth in 1485, before moving on to examine the complex

Elizabeth created a propaganda image of herself embodying English victories and English
power which has endured into the 21st century. But what was the reality of her reign? This
course will seek to explore the life and times of this extraordinary woman and, in the
process, uncover something of the truth behind the mask. We will explore such topics as
her troubled and often dangerous youth, her policies as Queen where she was a woman in a
man's world, as well as looking at some of the famous events and personalities of her
